In Our Boys Did Nobly, Civil War historian and Antietam Park Ranger John Hoptak tells the story of the 48th, 50th, and 96th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments during the consequential Maryland Campaign of September 1862, with special focus of the crucial and bloody battles of South Mountain and Antietam.
John Hoptak is a native of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and a lifelong student of the American Civil War, John David Hoptak earned his masters degree in History from Lehigh University. He is the author of First in Defense of the Union: The Civil War History of the First Defenders (2004) and Our Boys Did Nobly: Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, Soldiers at the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam (2009). He has also authored numerous articles that have appeared in America's Civil War and Pennsylvania Heritage. Hoptak is also active in historical preservation and is leading the effort to restore the 48th Pennsylvania Monument at the Antietam National Battlefield. Hoptak is employed as an Interpretative Park Ranger at Antietam and as an adjunct professor of American History at American Military University. He currently resides in Gettysburg with his wife, Laura, and their cats.
